Reuss-Schleiz 1678-SD 2/3 thaler KM-20
This specimen was lot 5379 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €1,600 (about US$2,068 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"REUSS-SCHLEIZ, GRAFSCHAFT, SEIT 1806 FÜRSTENTUM, Heinrich I. 1640-1692. 2/3 Taler 1678, Schleiz, mit Gegenstempel des Fränkischen Kreises auf der Vorderseite: 60.N über verschlungenem Monogramm FC. RR Hübsche Patina, sehr schön +, Gegenstempel: vorzüglich. (county of Reuss-Schleiz, Henry I, 1640-92, two-thirds thaler of 1678, Schleiz mint, with the counterstamp of the Franconian Circle ("N./FC") on the obverse. Very rare, handsome patina, choice very fine. The counterstamp is extremely fine.)"
Thalers exist for this insignificant state but are prohibitively rare for the average collector, who must make do with two-thirds thalers or gulden such as this issue of 1678-79. All the counts of Reuss were named Heinrich and were numbered consecutively, starting with the first male child born in each century. Thus, this Heinrich I succeeded Heinrich IX and was followed by Heinrich XI.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, this specimen 17,58 g.
