Regensburg 1547 guldiner Dav-9680
This specimen was lot 72234 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $600. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Regensburg. Guldiner, 1547. Regensburg mint. Pankraz von Sinzenhofen. PCGS EF-40. In the name of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V (Charles I of Spain). Evenly handled and mildly toned, this crown presents an appealing nature and emanates from the final decade in the reign of the Holy Roman Emperor." The early large German silver coins were called either thalers or guldiners and were worth sixty kreuzer. Later in the century, the thaler rose to 72 kreuzer but the guldiner or gulden remained fixed at sixty kreuzer and therefore shrank in weight. Coins were issued for Regensburg both by the city council and the bishop (shown here). The bishop Pancratius Sinzenhofer (1538-48) issued this type in 1544-47. It is expensive but the other episcopal thalers for the sixteenth century are much rarer. Today, Regensburg is part of Bavaria.
