Künker sale 405, lot 3034

This specimen was lot 3034 in Künker sale 405 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €600 (about US$787 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DIE REICHSSTADT REGENSBURG. DIE ZEIT DES KAISERS KARL V., 1520-1556. Prägungen aus der zweiten Regensburger Münzperiode von 1535 bis 1551 nach der österreichisch-bayerischen Münzordnung vom 1. Februar 1535. Guldiner 1538, mit Titel Karls V. Münzmeister vermutlich Hans Lutzens Witwe. Feine Patina, sehr schön. (city of Regensburg, guldiner of 1538, struck in the name of Charles V. Fine patina, very fine.)"

This type was struck 1535, 1538-39 and 1547-49 and is actually fairly affordable for a sixteenth century thaler. By the end of the century, the gulden would have slipped from one thaler to 5/6 thaler.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 28.82 g, 0.895 fine silver, 41 mm diameter, this specimen 29,07 g.

Catalog reference: KM MB49, Beckenbauer 2102 (this example); Dav-9682; Slg. Bach (Auktion Künker 238) 4529 leicht var.
