Regensburg 1522 batzen
This specimen was lot 3024 in Künker sale 405 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €70 (about US$92 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DIE REICHSSTADT REGENSBURG. DIE ZEIT DES KAISERS KARL V., 1520-1556. Prägungen aus der ersten Regensburger Münzperiode bis 1534 nach der bayerischen Münzordnung von 1506/1507. Batzen 1522. Münzmeister Hans Lutz. Mit kleinem Hüftbild St. Wolfgangs. R Kl. Prägeschwäche, sehr schön. (city of Regensburg, batzen of 1522, struck in the name of Charles V. With a small bust of the saint, rare, slightly weakly struck, very fine.)"
This type was struck 1522 only. The batzen, or four kreuzer, was a denomination best known from Switzerland. At this time, fifteen batzen made a thaler or gulden. The reverse depicts St. Wolfgang, with a legend imploring, "SAИCT: WOLFGAИG:ORA PRO:И", that is, "Saint Wolfgang, pray for us."
Wikipedia comments, "Wolfgang of Regensburg (c. 934-994 AD) was bishop of Regensburg in Bavaria from Christmas 972 until his death. He is regarded as one of the three great German saints of the 10th century, the other two being Ulrich of Augsburg and Conrad of Constance. Soon after Wolfgang's death many churches chose him as their patron saint, and various towns were named after him."
