Ragusa 1762-GB tallero Dav-1639
This specimen was lot 715 in Sincona Auction 103 (Zürich, May 2026), where it sold for 850 CHF (about US$1,296 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"KROATIEN Ragusa. Tallero Rettorale 1762, Ragusa. Vier Sterne auf der Brust. Selten in dieser Erhaltung. Rektoratstaler ohne Justierung sind sehr selten. (Croatia, city of Ragusa, rector's thaler of 1762, Ragusa mint. Obverse: four stars on the breast. Rare in this condition. NGC MS62.)"
This coin is an example of a type struck 1751-79 for the Republic of Ragusa, a Christian enclave on the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea. At the time, it was an independent city-state surrounded and protected by the Ottoman Empire, which ruled most of the Balkans. Ragusa was occupied by French troops in 1805 and annexed by Austria in 1814. The weight and fineness are taken from Numista.
