Stephen Album internet sale 28, lot 1051

This specimen was lot 1051 in Stephen Album internet sale 28 (Santa Rosa, CA, July 2024), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALIAN STATES: RAGUSA: Republic, AR tallero, 1760, PCGS graded Genuine XF Details." This coin is an example of a type struck 1751-79 for the Republic of Ragusa, a Christian enclave on the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea. At the time, it was an independent city-state surrounded and protected by the Ottoman Empire, which ruled most of the Balkans. Ragusa was occupied by French troops in 1805 and annexed by Austria in 1814. The SCWC doesn't give its exact specification but it is roughly equal to contemporary German thalers. The weight and fineness are taken from Numista.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 28.78 g, 0.566 fine silver, 42 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-18, Dav-1639.
