Künker sale 406, lot 4759

This specimen was lot 4759 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €1,300 (about US$1,706 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"KROATIEN, RAGUSA (DUBROVNIK), Stadt. Tallero Rettorale 1744. Kl. Kratzer im Feld der Vorderseite, fast vorzüglich. (city of Ragusa, rector's tallero of 1744. Light scratches in the obverse field, about extremely fine.)"

This coin is an example of a type struck 1743-48 for the Republic of Ragusa, a Christian enclave on the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea. At the time, it was an independent city-state surrounded and protected by the Ottoman Empire, which ruled most of the Balkans. Ragusa was occupied by French troops in 1805 and annexed by Austria in 1814. The SCWC doesn't give its exact specification but it is roughly equal to contemporary German talers.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 28.53 g.
