Künker sale 352, lot 2072

This specimen was lot 2072 in Künker sale 352 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €20,000 (about US$27,834 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"QUEDLINBURG, ABTEI, Anna Dorothea von Sachsen-Weimar, 1685-1704. 2 Dukaten 1704, Braunschweig, auf ihren Tod. É D . G . ANNA . DOROT . D . S . I . C . M . A . ET . W . IMP . LIB . SEC . DIOEC . QVEDL : ABB : / NATA . 13 . NOV . 1657 . INVEST . 29 . I AN . 1685 . DENATA . 23 . IVN . 1704 . Kopf r.//Dreimaster auf hoher See, oben ADVERSIS DECOR ADDITVS auf Spruchband, im Abschnitt das Münzmeisterzeichen l H.C.H. l (Heinrich Christoph Hille, Münzmeister in Braunschweig, 1689-1729). GOLD. Von größter Seltenheit. Min. gewellt, fast vorzüglich. Erworben 1953 bei der Firma Grabow, Berlin. (Germany, abbey of Quedlinburg, Anna Dorothea von Sachsen-Weimar, 1685-1704, double ducat of 1704, on her death. Obverse: head right; reverse: a three-masted ship on the sea, mintmaster's initials in exergue. Extremely rare, slightly wavy, about extremely fine.)"

This double ducat is the sole minted for this locale in the eighteenth century and it was accompanied by a thaler, a quarter thaler, a ducat and an eighth thaler, all rare. The abbey was annexed by Prussia in 1803 during the mediatizations. The last coinage is dated 1759.
