Quedlinburg 1617-HL thaler Dav-LS374
This specimen was lot 506 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €3,600 (about US$4,651 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Quedlinburg, ABTEI Dorothea von Sachsen, 1610-1617. Breiter Reichstaler 1617, Quedlinburg. Hübsche Patina, kl. Schrötlingsfehler, sehr schön-vorzüglich. Heinrich I. der erste deutsche König aus dem sächsischen Haus, gründete Quedlinburg und ist auch dort begraben. Er ist auf der Vorderseite dieses Talers mit Krone, Schwert und Reichsapfel zu sehen, hinter ihm befindet sich die Stadtansicht von Quedlinburg. Die Angabe NAT - 876 soll sein Geburtsjahr angeben, das aber nicht genau bekannt ist. In der Umschrift der Rückseite ist ein Fehler. Heinrich I. wird dort als RO IM bezeichnet, d. h. imperator romanorum = römischer Kaiser. Das trifft aber nicht zu, erst sein Sohn Otto I. wurde Kaiser. (abbey of Quedlinburg, Dorothy of Saxony, 1610-1617, wide thaler of 1617, Quedlinburg mint. Nice toning, small planchet flaws, very fine to extremely fine. Henry I, the first German king of the Saxon dynasty, founded Quedlinburg and is also buried there. He is depicted on the obverse with crown, sword and orb, behind him is the city view of Quedlinburg. The legend "NAT - 876" is the (estimated) date of the king's birth. The inscription erroneously proclaims him Holy Roman Emperor, a title held by his son, Otto I.)"
Like all thalers from this locale, this type is expensive. Quedlinburg thalers range from rare to unobtainable.
