Prussia 1881-A 20 mark
This specimen was part of lot 4183 in Künker sale 353 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), which sold for €700 (about US$974 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Wilhelm I. 1861-1888. 20 Mark 1877, 1881, A. 2 Stück., Sehr schön-vorzüglich. Erworben am 24.7.1967. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, William I, 1861-88, twenty mark of 1881. [One of] two pieces, very fine to extremely fine.)"
The first twenty mark was struck 1871-73 in substantial numbers from the Berlin (mintmark "A"), Hannover (mintmark "B") and Frankfurt (mintmark "C") mints. It was superseded in 1874 by this type with a revised reverse. There is a concurrent ten mark gold piece with a similar design.
