Künker sale 354, lot 6468

This specimen was lot 6468 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €19,000 (about US$26,442 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"REICHSGOLDMÜNZEN, HAMBURG, Freie und Hansestadt. 20 Mark 1881. Äußerst seltener Jahrgang. Nur 500 Exemplare geprägt. Vorzüglich. (Germany, free city of Hamburg, twenty mark of 1881. Extremely rare date, only 500 pieces struck, extremely fine.)"

This is a rare date of a type struck 1875-84, 1887-89. The Hamburg mint is still in operation, striking coins for the Federal Republic of Germany.

Recorded mintage: 500 proofs.

Specification: 7.96 g, 0.900 fine gold, .230 troy oz AGW.
