Prussia 1701 ducat Fr-2297
This specimen was lot 1818 in Künker sale 352 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €2,600 (about US$3,619 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Friedrich (III.) I. 1701-1713. Dukat 1701, Königsberg, auf seine Krönung. GOLD. Kl. Schrötlingsfehler, gewellt, sehr schön. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick I, 1701-13, ducat of 1701, Königsberg mint, on his coronation. Minor nicks, slightly bent, very fine.)
Kurfürst Friedrich III. setzte sich am 18. Januar 1701 in Königsberg als erster Hohenzoller die preußische Königskrone auf und nannte sich fortan Friedrich I. Voraus ging der Zeremonie ein sogenannter Kronkontrakt, in dem der deutsche Kaiser dem brandenburgischen Kurfürsten das Tragen des Königstitels gestattete. Der Titel war allerdings auf das außerhalb des Heiligen Römischen Reiches gelegene Preußen beschränkt. An der Stellung des Kurfürstentums Brandenburg im Heiligen Römischen Reich änderte sich durch die Krönung formal zwar nichts, tatsächlich war Brandenburg von diesem Zeitpunkt an aber nur noch Zentralprovinz des sich zur europäischen Großmacht entwickelnden preußischen Staates. (Elector Friedrich III sat on January 18, 1701, in Königsberg as the first Hohenzollern to wear the Prussian royal crown and from then on called himself Friedrich I. The ceremony was preceded by a so-called crown contract, in which the German emperor allowed the Brandenburg elector to bear the title of king. The title, however, was limited to Prussia outside the Holy Roman Empire. The position of the Electorate of Brandenburg in the Holy Roman Empire was not changed as a result of the coronation, but from this point on Brandenburg was actually only the central province of the Prussian state that was developing into a major European power.)"
This was one of several ducats (KM 17, KM 18, KM 19) issued by the new king in 1701. None are common but this one is the most available, suggesting that it was saved.
