Provence (1382-84) franc à pied Fr-215
This specimen was lot 769 in Jean Elsen sale 160 (Brussels, November 2024), where it sold for €1,100 (about US$1,393 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"FRANCE, PROVENCE, Comté, Louis Ier d'Anjou (1382-1384), AV franc à pied, Avignon. 1er type. Au titre de duc de Calabre. D/ LVDOVICS: DVX- KALABRI: AND' Le duc deb. de f. sous un dais gothique, ten. une épée et la main de justice. Le champ fleurdelisé. R/ Dans un quadrilobe anglé, croix cantonnée de deux lis et deux couronnes. Rare. La tranche irrégulière. Très Beau. Provient de notre liste 256, mai 2011, 520. (France, county of Provence, Louis I of Anjou, 1382-84, gold franc on foot, Avignon mint, first type, with the title of duke of Calabria. Obverse: the duke stands, facing, under a gothic dais, holding sword and hand of justice, with fleurs-de-lys in the field; reverse: within an angled quadrilobe, a cross cantonned with two lilies and two crowns. Rare, irregular edge, very fine.)"
This is one of two gold coins from this ruler, the other being a rare écu d'or (Fr-214).
