southeast France at the end of the Hundred Years War

This specimen was lot 74454 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $480. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN. Aragon. Dinero, ND (1185-1209). Arles Mint. Alfonso I. PCGS AU-58. A most elusive early Aragonese hammered issue from a mint in modern day France, delivering rich details and only the lightest signs of actual handling throughout." This specimen was offered again as lot 49377 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2026), where it sold for $240. Wikipedia comments, "Alfonso II (1180 – 2 February 1209) was the second son of Alfonso II of Aragon (who was Alfonso I of Provence) and Sancha of Castile. His father transferred the County of Provence from his uncle Sancho to him in 1185. Alfonso II was born in Barcelona." This is a French coin struck for Provence ("PROVINCIA"), not Spanish, so we are calling it a denier, not a dinero.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver or billon.

Catalog reference: Crusafont i Sabater-168.
