Portuguese Guinea 1933 50 centavos
This fifty centavos was issued by Portugal for Portuguese Guinea, a one year type and scarce in nice condition. Many of the pre-World War Two issues for the Portuguese colonies are hard to find. This specimen was lot 140 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $2,541. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLONIAL AFRICA, Portuguese. Guiné Portuguesa (Portuguese Guinea). República Portuguesa. 1910-1974. NI-Æ 50 Centavos. Lisboa (Lisbon) mint. Dated 1933. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 66. Superb gem BU. Incredibly rare, both in grade and type. Purchased from M. Louis Teller, April 1976." This specimen sold for five times the catalog value.
