The specimen shown is an example of a type struck in Portugal for 2002-06. Portugal began minting euros in 2002, when their use became compulsory. The admission of additional members caused the reverse to be redesigned in 2008 to show the enlarged zone.

Recorded mintage: 147,411,038 plus 15,000 proofs.

Specification: 5.73 g, brass, 22.1 mm diameter, Obv: royal seal of 1144, country name in looped design by Vitor Santos; Rev: value and map within circle by Luc Luycx; Edge: reeded and plain sections.
