In 1910, Portugal, having ousted her king, dropped the réis and adopted the escudo, divided into 100 centavos. The specimen shown is a common date of a type struck for Portugal 1963-85. It superseded a silver type struck 1932-51 (KM 580) and is the last of the denomination altho this module was used for several commemoratives (KM 605, 613, 617). The escudo was retired in 1999 when Portugal joined the euro.

Recorded mintage: 17,948,000.
