In 1910, Portugal, having ousted her king, dropped the réis and adopted the escudo, divided into 100 centavos. The specimen shown commemorates the financial reform instituted by the dictator Salazar in the 1920's. It was the first issue of this denomination in coin form. It is readily available today.

Recorded mintage: 1,000,000.

Specification: 21 g, 0.800 fine silver, 34 mm diameter.
