In 1910, Portugal, having ousted her king, dropped the réis and adopted the escudo, divided into 100 centavos. This type was struck 1912-16 and is quite a bit more common than many dates of the succeeding copper-nickel type. No two centavos were struck after 1921 and the five centavos was retired in 1927. The escudo was retired in 1999 when Portugal joined the euro.
