This type was struck in Lisbon 1891-1908. King Carlos ruled from 1889 until his assassination at the hands of an anarchist in 1908. His son Manuel II ruled for only two years before he was deposed and the Republic established. The last five hundred réis piece was struck in 1910, the year the king was overthrown.
Recorded mintage: 680,000, a better date.
Specification: 12.50 g, 0.917 fine silver, 30 mm diameter.
