Sincona sale 54, lot 975

This specimen was lot 975 in Sincona sale 54 (Zürich, May 2019), where it sold for 750 CHF (about US$893 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"PORTUGAL | Königreich, Luis I. 1861-1889. 10000 Reis 1882, Lissabon. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. Feine Goldpatina. (kingdom of Portugal, Louis I, 1861-89, 10,000 réis of 1882, Lisbon mint. Very fine-extremely fine, Nice gold toning.)"

This type was struck in Lisbon 1878-89 and is one of the more common of Portuguese gold coins. Gold 2000 and 5000 réis bearing this portrait also exist along with a series of silver issues.

Recorded mintage: 15,000.

Specification: 17.73 g, 0.917 fine gold, .522 troy oz AGW, 29 mm diameter; this specimen: 17.67 g.
