This specimen was lot 1120 in Stephen Album internet sale 28 (Santa Rosa, CA, July 2024), where it sold for $720. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL: Maria II, 1834-1853, AE 20 reis, 1849, lovely original toning, PCGS graded MS62 BN, ex Joe Sedillot Collection." This type was struck 1847-53 and, like most Portuguese early copper coins, is rare in nice condition. Decimal coinage was introduced in 1837 but doesn't seem to have had an immediate effect on the coppers, which were struck to the old module.
Recorded mintage: 2,269,000.
Specification: 25.5 g, copper, 37 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM-482.
