Stack's Bowers May 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 73185

This specimen was lot 73185 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. 1/2 Real, ND (1385-1433)-P. Porto Mint. Joao I. NGC AU Details--Tooled. While extensive fine tooling is visible on the obverse under magnification, it has not spoiled the coin's overall eye appeal. The strike still appears fresh and clear, and the deep patina retains a lovely sheen. A pleasing example of this billon issue from medieval Portugal." Half reales of this style are known from Lisbon, Porto and Evora. The mintmark is below the royal monogram. Numista limits the period of issue to 1385-97.
