Poland 1917-FF 5 fenigow
This specimen was lot 25487 in Heritage sale 3026 (Long Beach, October 2013), where it sold for $646.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "German Occupation Proof 5 Fenigow 1917-F, Proof 63 PCGS, reflective surfaces with minimal oxidation, rare in Proof." As a result of the Vienna Conference of 1815, Poland was returned to the partition by Prussia, Austria and Russia. After the Germans defeated the Russians in 1916-17, they occupied the rest of Poland and issued occupation coinage in iron for the territory in 1917-18. When the Germans were in turn defeated in November 1918, the Poles rose up and reclaimed their independence, defeating a Russian invasion in 1920-22.
