Stack's Bowers 2020 NYINC sale, lot 21278
Poland SB120-21278r.jpg

This specimen was lot 21278 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $3,600. The catalog description[1] noted, "POLAND. 50 Zlotych, 1819-IB. Warsaw Mint. Alexander I. NGC Unc Details--Obverse Repaired. Large Head type. Crisp throughout the designs with a repair behind Alexander's head where an attempt has been made to conceal a scratch. The repair work, seemingly performed without the intended results, has left a rosy-colored circular spot in the area, while the surrounding fields are bright yellow and fully gleaming. All considered, an opportunity to acquire all the intended detail of the design at a fraction of what a choice Mint State example would typically bring." This type was struck 1817-19. A slightly revised type (C103a), with a smaller bust and slightly different arms, was issued 1819-27 but is even scarcer. Gold twenty-five zlotych also exist.

Recorded mintage: 19,500 (KM C03 and C103a).

Specification: 9.78 g, 0.917 fine gold.

Catalog reference: Fr-105; KM C103; Bit-806.
