Stack's Bowers 2026 NYINC sale, lot 49160
SB126-49160r.jpg

This specimen was lot 49160 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2026), where it sold for $384. The catalog description[1] noted, "POLAND. 8 Groszy, 1790-EB. Warsaw Mint. Stanislaus Augustus. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, AU Details. From the Collection of Kazmier Wysocki, former mayor of Hackensack, New Jersey." The kingdom of Poland, weakened by the devastation of the Great Northern War (1700-21), fell under the domination of her neighbors, Prussia, Russia and Austria. Stanislas Poniatowski, a former lover of Catherine the Great, was installed as her puppet king on the death of the Saxon August III. When he proved to be insufficiently pliant, the partitions began. In three slices, in 1772, 1793 and 1795, the entire state was devoured. Even then, Stanislas could not rally the greedy and selfish Polish nobility to defend the country. Numista calls this coin a "Dwuzłotówka koronna". It was struck 1787-94 and is common in worn condition. The SCWC incorrectly cross-references this to Dav-1621. One złoty was four groszy.

Recorded mintage: 585,000.

Specification: 9.35 g, 0.627 fine silver, 29 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-209.1.
