The specimen shown is a nickel plated steel peso struck 2003-17. This piece has a face value (January 2010) of about two cents and was first issued in 1995. It was converted from copper-nickel to nickel plated steel in 2003. The obverse is the portrait is of Dr. José Rizal, whose martyrdom was the spark of the independence movement against Spain in 1898.
