Stack's Bowers February 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 75480
SB224-75480r.jpg

This specimen was lot 75480 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2024), where it sold for $125. The catalog description[1] noted, "PHILIPPINES. 25 Centavos, 1962. PCGS MS-65. Tied with one other example as finest certified by PCGS." Struck at the United States mint in 1958-66 for the Philippines, this type was accompanied by one, five, ten and fifty centavos which used the old commonwealth designs but were struck in base metal. Worn specimens fill dealer junk boxes but nice uncirculated examples are hard to find, being too cheap for dealers to stock. This type superseded the old silver twenty centavos of 1937-45. This example sold for 96 times the catalog value.

Recorded mintage: 40,000,000.

Specification: 5 g, copper-nickel-zinc, 23.5 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-189.1.
