Philippines 1947-S peso
The first specimen was lot 73386 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, June 2020), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "PHILIPPINES. Peso, 1947-S. San Francisco Mint. NGC MS-66. Featuring the bust of General Douglas Mac Arthur. A beautifully toned representative of the type displaying lovely light pastel iridescence throughout." This commemorative was struck in San Francisco (the Manila mint having been destroyed in World War Two) to honor the efforts of Douglas MacArthur in liberating the Philippines from Japanese occupation. It was accompanied by a fifty centavos (KM 184).
