Philippines 1897 peso rev DSLR.jpg

The government of Spain issued this coin for the Philippines in 1897 even as its hold on the colony was collapsing. It is struck to the same standard and uses the same bust as the five pesetas of Spain (struck 1896-99, KM 707) and the peso of Puerto Rico (struck 1895, KM 24). The coin is popular and brings a good price even tho it is not rare. It was demonetized by the American occupiers and replaced by the silver peso of 1903.

Recorded mintage: 6,000,000.

Specification: 25 g, 0.900 fine silver, .723 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-17664, KM 154.
