Pfalz 1779-AS thaler Dav-1959
This specimen was lot 2283 in Künker Auction 425 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €1,100 (about US$1,558 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHE MÜNZEN UND MEDAILLEN · PFALZ, KURFÜRSTENTUM Karl Theodor, 1743-1799. Konv.-Taler 1779, Mannheim. Prachtexemplar. Herrliche Patina, winz. Schrötlingsfehler, Stempelglanz. (Germany, electorate of the Palatinate, Charles Theodore, 1743-99, convention thaler of 1779, Mannheim mint. Cabinet piece, superb patina, minor planchet defect, uncirculated.)"
This type was struck 1778-95 and is the most common thaler from this state. Karl Theodor inherited the electorate of Bavaria on the death of its incumbent in 1777, thus uniting all the branches of the Wittelsbach family. Lacking legitimate heirs, his realm passed to a cousin, Maximilian I Joseph, duke of Zweibrücken.
