Pfalz 1778 ducat Fr-2037
This specimen was lot 2067 in Künker sale 352 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €2,400 (about US$3,340 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"PFALZ, KURFÜRSTENTUM, Karl Theodor, 1743-1799. Dukat 1778, Mannheim. Rheingold. Ohne Signatur AS unter der Büste. GOLD. Kl. Kratzer, vorzüglich. (Germany, electorate of Pfalz, Charles Theodore, 1743-99, ducat of 1778, Mannheim mint, gold from the Rhine, without "AS" under the bust. Minor scratches, extremely fine.)
Die Rückseitendarstellung des vorliegenden Stückes zeigt, im Gegensatz zu den Dukaten von 1763 und 1764, den tatsächlichen Verlauf des Rheins im Verhältnis zur Lage des Schlosses. Die Umschrift der Rückseite SIC FULGENT LITTORA RHEINI bedeutet: So blinkt das Ufer des Rheins. Das Goldwaschen geschah auf einem schrägen Brett, das mit einem grünen Tuch - die Goldflitter hoben sich dann besser ab - bespannt war. Dieses Tuch wurde regelmäßig ausgewaschen und dadurch ein Sandgoldgemisch gewonnen. Durch Amalgamation, d. h. Zufügung von Quecksilber, wurde das Gold herausgelöst und konnte dann erschmolzen werden. Alle Versuche, das Goldwaschen zu mechanisieren, blieben wegen der geringen Ausbeute erfolglos. Schon das Goldene Vlies der Argonauten wurde als Teil des Goldwaschens gedeutet. (In contrast to the ducats from 1763 and 1764, the design on the reverse of the present piece shows the actual course of the Rhine in relation to the location of the castle. The inscription on the back SIC FULGENT LITTORA RHEINI means: This is how the bank of the Rhine shines. The gold panning took place on a sloping board that was covered with a green cloth - the gold particles then stood out better. This cloth was washed out regularly and a mixture of sand and gold was obtained. By amalgamation with mercury, the gold was dissolved out and could then be melted. All attempts to mechanize gold panning were unsuccessful because of the low yield. Even the golden fleece of the Argonauts was interpreted as part of the gold panning.)"
The SCWC shows this type but only mentions the dates 1767-68.
