Pfalz 1567 thaler Dav-9631
This specimen was lot 2789 in Sincona sale 26 (Zürich, October 2015), where it sold for 2,800 CHF (about US$3,459 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Pfalz-Kurlinie, Friedrich III. 1557-1576 Taler 1567. Heidelberg. Selten. Fast vorzüglich. Schöne Patina (Germany, electorate of Pfalz, Frederick III, 1557-76, thaler of 1567, Heidelberg mint. Scarce, choice extremely fine, handsome patina.)"
The Palatinate, on the border with France, was divided several times. The Pfalz-Simmern line, founded 1410, expired in 1685 and the county passed to Pfalz-Neuburg. Frederick III of Pfalz-Simmern was the Count Palatine on the extinction of the main line in 1559. He established Lutheranism in his realm. The county was divided again on his death.
