The first specimen was lot 1091 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €750 (about US$969 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"PFALZ, KURFÜRSTENTUM Johann Kasimir, 1576-1592. Taler 1578, Heidelberg. R Henkelspur, sehr schön. (electoral Palatinate, John Casimir, 1576-92, thaler of 1578, Heidelberg mint. Scarce, mount mark, very fine.)"

The second specimen was lot 1064 in Sincona sale 50 (Zürich, October 2018), where it sold for 12,000 CHF (about US$14,475 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"Pfalz, Kurlinie. Johann Kasimir, 1576-1592. Taler 1578, Heidelberg. *IOH*CASIMIRVS*COM*PAL*RHE*DVX*BAV* Hüftbild nach rechts im Prunkharnisch mit Halskrause, in der Rechten ein geschulterter Streitkolben der auf das A von BAV zeigt, in der Linken ein Schwertknauf. Rv. *CON - STANTER* - *ET*SINCERE* - 1578 Das viergeteilte Wappen Pfalz-Bayern auf Lorbeer- und Palmzweig auf einem Ring ruhend, dessen oberer Teil aus zwei verschlungenen Händen mit Krausen gebildet und dessen unterer Teil durch einen gefassten spitzen Diamanten geschlossen ist. Sehr selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Hübsche Patina. Vorzüglich. (Germany, Electorate of Pfalz, John Casimir, 1576-92, thaler of 1578, Heidelberg mint. Obverse: half length bust to the right, in ceremonial armor with ruff, in the right hand a shouldered mace pointing to the A of BAV, in the left a sword pommel; reverse: The quartered arms of Pfalz-Bavaria, laurel and palm branches behind, and wreath formed of two arms, hands clasped. Very rare, especially in this condition, Attractive patina, Extremely fine.)"

The Palatinate, on the border with France, was divided several times. The Pfalz-Simmern line, founded 1410, expired in 1685 and the county passed to Pfalz-Neuburg. Most of the early thalers are rare. This type is also known for 1579.
