This specimen was lot 23888 in Heritage sale 3020 (Long Beach, September 2012), where it sold for $1,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "Pfalz-Simmern. Richard (1569-1598) gold Ducat 1578, MS62 NGC, lightly toned and original with very sharp details. Palatinate issue featuring the Count standing on the obverse and reverse with arms." The Palatinate, on the border with France, was divided several times. The Pfalz-Simmern line, founded 1410, expired in 1685 and the county passed to Pfalz-Neuburg.
