This specimen was lot 70722 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it sold for $288. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Pfalz. 1/4 Taler, 1525. Ludwig V. PCGS Genuine--Environmental Damage, AU Details. Remnants of sooty charcoal and brown account for the designation, though the piece still retains wholesome eye appeal. Brilliant with uniform darker fields and bright, steel gray devices, this VERY SCARCE offering is sure to please specialists." A rare one year type issued for Electoral Pfalz. An eight guldengroschen (KM MB104), a half guldengroschen (KM MB108) and one guldengroschen (KM MB110) also exist. The guldengroschen became the guldiner which later split into the gulden (light) and thaler (heavy). The first true quarter thaler was issued in Pfalz in 1610 (KM 32).
