The ten centavos denomination was originally occupied by the silver dinero, struck 1863-1917. It was superseded by this copper-nickel coin in 1918, which was replaced by a brass type in 1942 when World War Two drove up the price of nickel. This sub-type, issued 1918-26, was replaced by a slightly different type issued 1935-41. It is accompanied by copper-nickel five and twenty centavos.

Recorded mintage: 3,000,000.

Specification: copper-nickel.

Catalog reference: KM 214.1.
