This type was struck 1864-65, 1907-08 and 1914-17. Unlike the similar half dinero (five centavos), dinero (ten centavos) and quinto (twenty centavos), this coin was minted only sporadically. Fortunately for collectors, many were saved and the type is not rare, even in uncirculated. It was replaced by a billon half sol (KM 216) struck 1922-35 and a brass half sol (KM 220) struck 1935-65.
Recorded mintage: 178,000.
Specification: 12.5 g, 0.900 fine silver, 0.3617 oz ASW, reeded edge.
Catalog reference: KM 203.
