This medio dinero, or half dime, was struck in Lima in 1896. Most issued after 1898 were made from melted down one sol coins. Varieties and overdates abound; for 1896, an 1896/5 overdate is recorded. The catalog also mentions an error in the obverse legend where the "E" in "FIRME" is inverted. The example shown is the normal issue of assayers TF; assayer "F" also exists. A earlier type, with a slightly different figure of seated Liberty, was issued 1863-64 (KM 189). The silver coin was replaced in 1918 by a copper-nickel five centavos.
Recorded mintage: 456,000.
Specification: 1.25 g, 0.900 fine silver, reeded edge.
Catalog reference: KM 206.2.
