Sedwick sale 12, lot 1618

This specimen was lot 1618 in Sedwick sale 12 (Winter Park, FL, October 2012), where it sold for $885. The catalog description[1] noted, "Lima, Peru, 8 reales, 1825JM, encapsulated NGC AU 58. KM-142.1. Scarce first date of the type, exceptional strike and grade (tied for second finest in the NGC census), with beautiful luster and traces of toning, just a few bagmarks and surface 'sweating' (as made) near rim." This type was struck at Lima 1825-28 and at Cuzco 1826-29 and is rather common; the complete span of Peru standing liberty eight reales runs 1825-55. Assayer JM is recorded for the Lima mint 1825-31.

Recorded mintage: unknown but reasonably common.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver, .786 troy oz ASW.
