Pergola 1798-AP baiocco
This specimen was lot 42395 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Roman Republic. Baiocco, 1798 AP. Pergola Mint. PCGS Genuine--Environmental Damage, AU Details. SCARCE one-year type." The French invasion of the Papal States, with its attendant looting and devastation, shattered the fragile economy of the state. The paper currency, backed by the (looted) assets of the Monte de Piedad, collapsed and specie went into hiding. Temporary mints, including Pergola, were opened to provide emergency copper and billon coinage. This type was issued by the Roman Republic, not the pope.
Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.
Specification: 10.6 g, copper.
