Pavia (1359-78) pegione
This specimen was lot 986 in Steve Album Auction 52 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2025), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "PAVIA: Galeazzo II Visconti, 1359-1378, AR pegione, +GALEAZ• VICECOMES• D• MEDIOLANI• PP• 3C, Visconti arms in quadrilobe // S•SIRVS* *PAPIA*•*, St. Sirus nimbate, seated facing, raising his right hand in benediction and holding crosier in his left, VF." The pegione, a denomination popular in Milan, was equal to the grosso used elsewhere in Italy. Galeazzo conquered Pavia in 1359 and added it to the Visconti domain. The Visconti were not made dukes until 1395, after Galeazzo's death, but they had an iron grip on Milan nonetheless.
