This specimen was lot 3222 in Steve Album Auction 53 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2025), where it sold for $228. The catalog description[1] noted, "PAPAL STATES: Pius IX, 1846-1878, AR 2 lira, 1869-R year XXIV, PON MAX, large bust variety, a wonderful lustrous mint state example! PCGS graded MS64. The sole finest graded example at PCGS (Top Pop)." This denomination was struck for the pope 1866-70. This subtype, with the pope's title abbreviated "PON· M·", was struck 1868-70. The Papal States were annexed by Italy in 1870 and the series ended.
