Steve Album Auction 52, lot 984

This specimen was lot 984 in Steve Album Auction 52 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2025), where it sold for $420. The catalog description[1] noted, "PAPAL STATES: Pius IX, 1846-1878, AR 2 lire, Rome, 1868 year XXIII, large bust, a wonderful lustrous mint state example! PCGS graded MS64. The sole finest graded example at PCGS (Top Pop)." This denomination was struck for the pope 1866-70. This subtype, with the pope's title abbreviated "PON· M·", was struck 1868-70. The Papal States were annexed by Italy in 1870 and the series ended.

Recorded mintage: 978,000.

Specification: 10 g, 0.835 fine silver, 27 mm diameter, .268 troy oz ASW, reeded edge.
