Künker sale 403, lot 1716

This specimen was lot 1716 in Künker sale 403 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €550 (about US$722 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"PAPST PIUS IX., 1846-1878. Prägungen des Papstes Pius IX. Aus der Münzstätte Rom nach der Münzreform vom 14. April 1858. 2 ½ Scudi AN XVII/1862 R, Rom. 3,89 g Feingold. GOLD. Fast Stempelglanz. (Papal States, Pius IX, 1846-78, 2½ scudi of 1862, year 17, Rome mint. About uncirculated.)"

The first coinage reform in the Papal States was implemented in the early 1830's during the reign of Gregory XVI (1831-46). All the doppie, zecchini, guili, testoni, etc., were dropped in favor of a silver scudo divided into one hundred baiocchi. Gold one, , five and ten scudi were minted at Rome and Bologna until 1865. This date is known with regnal years 16 and 17.
