Papal States 1862-R 10 baiocchi
This specimen was lot 306 in Nomisma Aste e-live-auction 3 (Verona, Italy, May 2023), where it did not sell. The lot description noted, "Papal States Pio IX (1846-1878) 10 Baiocchi 1862 An. XVII - SPL-FDC." This type, struck 1858-64 at Rome, is not listed as rare but seldom turns up. The obverse legend was updated mid-year on the anniversary of the reign of the pope. The coinage was reformed to use centesimi and lire in 1867 but the Papal States were annexed by Italy in 1870 and the series ended. The denomination was introduced in 1836 at 2.68 g, 0.900 fine, then changed to 2.85 g, 0.800 fine in 1858, then 2.66 g, 0.835 fine in 1865.
