Papal States 1860-R 20 baiocchi
This specimen was lot 2296 in Stephen Album sale 43 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2022), where it sold for $336. The catalog description[1] noted, "PAPAL STATES: Pius IX, 1846-1870, AR 20 baiocchi, Rome, 1860 year XV-R, a fantastic lustrous example! PCGS graded MS66, ex Joe Sedillot Collection." This type was struck at Bologna 1858-59 and Rome 1858-65 and is fairly common. A slightly revised type, KM 1360a, which was 5.33 g, 0.835 fine silver, was struck 1865-66. Another coinage reform in 1866 dropped the scudo in favor of the lira used in the rest of the kingdom of Italy. This date comes with year XIV or XV on the obverse; neither obtains a premium. An 1860/50 overdate is reported.
Recorded mintage: 3,656,000.
Specification: 5.71 g, 0.800 fine silver.
Catalog reference: KM-1360, Berman-3313.
