The first coinage reform in the Papal States was implemented in the early 1830's during the reign of Gregory XVI (1831-46). All the doppie, zecchini, guili, testoni, etc., were dropped in favor of a silver scudo divided into one hundred baiocchi. Gold one, , five and ten scudi were minted at Rome and Bologna until 1865. This specimen was lot 1601 in Sincona sale 38 (Zürich, May 2017), where it sold for 550 CHF (about US$660 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Gregorio XVI. 1831-1846 5 Scudi AN V/1835 R. Roma. Gutes sehr schön. (Papal States, Gregory XVI, 1831-46, five scudi of 1835, Rome mint. Good very fine.)"
