Papal States 1835-R 10 scudi
This specimen was lot 30243 in Heritage sale 3037 (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $2,467.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Papal States. Gregory XVI gold 10 Scudi 1835-R Anno V MS64 NGC, Rome mint. A spectacular, early date in the series with honey-gold surfaces that hold vibrant, original mint luster. Of particular note are the frosty and razor-sharp devices that sit atop glossy fields. Seldom encountered in this premium level of preservation, greatly appealing as such. (Notated incorrectly by NGC at Anno XVI.) From The Alexander Collection." This type is listed for 1835-45 and was struck in Rome (shown here) and Bologna. In the reform of 1834, the medieval grossi, giulii and testone were dropped and 100 baiocchi = 1 scudo. In 1866, the currency was reformed to use centesimi and lire in order to match that of the surrounding kingdom of Italy. In 1870, the Papal States were occupied and annexed by the kingdom of Italy and coinage ceased until 1929.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 17.33 g, 0.900 fine gold, .501 troy oz AGW.
