Künker sale 403, lot 1669

This specimen was lot 1669 in Künker sale 403 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €360 (about US$472 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"PAPST GREGOR XVI., 1831-1846. Prägungen des Papstes Gregor XVI. Vor der Münzreform vom 10. Januar 1835 - Die Münzstätte Rom. 50 Baiocchi (1/2 Scudo romano) A I/1832 R, Rom. Stempelschneider Niccolò Cerbara. Vorzüglich. (Papal States, Gregory XVI, 1831-46, fifty baiocchi or half scudo of the year I (sic), Rome mint. Extremely fine.)"

The first coinage reform in the Papal States was implemented in the early 1830's during the reign of Gregory XVI (1831-46). All the doppie, zecchini, guili, testoni, etc., were dropped in favor of a silver scudo divided into one hundred baiocchi. Gold one, , five and ten scudi were minted at Rome and Bologna until 1865. This type was struck at Rome and Bologna 1832 and 1834. This date is known with regnal year II only.
